Winter 2009 - 'The Inkblot Test'

You see that man with the dazed, confused look on his face, that could never be you. Never be you talking to the pigeons, feeding them imaginary grain as they flap around you and envelop your shoulders. That could never be you with the split personality disorder leading two lives simultaneously yet never meeting the other nor acknowledging its existence.

Then you wind up here in this office, the man in the bleached white coat coaxing thoughts and impressions from the derelict pockets of your psyche. Thoughts you wouldn't share with even your significant other, but as the injection races through your veins you open up like the mouth of a river pouring into the ocean.

You want to say the drawing reminds you of furry, fluffy rabbits bounding around a green meadow, but you say it reminds you of death, of neglect and years of tortured dreams. Your lips utter these words you didn't wish to say. You are at risk of being labeled the terminal i word - insane, but is there any right or wrong answers here?

What you don't know is that others have realised you are harbouring  multiple beings under a single skin. The person they are friends with isn't the same one everyone else knows. The two worlds have collided and now you are here, yet everyone has another side, another source of creativity and inspiration for the world. Not violent, not wrong, just different.

Psychologists and psychiatrists may use ink blot drawings to gauge and understand the human mind, but one persons interpretation can be wildly different from another. The human mind is incredibly complex and can't be nailed down by a template, much like art. This collection seeks to pull those quirky thoughts and inspirations into the designs. One wonders if when anaylsed, these design interpretations of the ink blots would conclude the designer to be unstable, worthy of meeting and discussing them with the man in the bleached white coat.
